The Federation for the Management of Projects is accredited to Level 6 and ILM, which is the Institute of Leadership and Management, part of the City and Guilds group. ILM has six levels, from Level 2 (GCSE equivalent) up to Level 7 (postgraduate/Master’s level). FMP sits at Level 6, aimed at senior managers or those directing small organisations. It’s also suitable for anyone looking to develop or validate leadership capabilities, regardless of their role.
It covers areas other qualifications don’t. It’s the only independently accredited qualification of its type. While others focus mainly on delivery, FMP begins at the idea stage and goes through change management, business case development, delivery, and even benefit realisation. Most stop at delivery—we go beyond.
It’s for anyone—from beginners to senior executives. There are no prerequisites. The course shows the full journey of project management and leadership, helping participants recognise and title skills they may already have but didn’t realise.
FMP is cross-sector by design. It includes examples relevant to various industries like law enforcement to medical fields. We tailor exercises and case studies to the participants’ background while maintaining a consistent, accredited core structure.
No academic prerequisites. We recommend some real-world experience—post-GCSE or A-Level—but it’s not mandatory. All participants, regardless of background, will go through the same structured journey.
The course is broken into 14 fundamentals: change management, business case, benefits, risk, issues, stakeholders, requirements, information, knowledge, quality assurance, procurement, planning, cost, budget, resources, and monitoring control. They follow a logical project lifecycle and are aligned with leadership tools and techniques.
There’s 150 hours of pre-course reading, then a five-day in-person course. Exercises include requirements gathering, prioritization, planning, etc. You’re assessed during group and individual exercises, via a multiple-choice test, and finally through a written assessment reflecting how you've applied what you’ve learned.
Accreditation from ILM at Level 6, 15 credits towards further education, increased confidence, and a deeper understanding of the project lifecycle. Plus, you leave with a toolkit of leadership and project management skills—some you already have but haven’t named, and others that are new.
It helps them identify the skills and knowledge needed to lead effectively. It includes models like Tuckman’s team development and situational leadership, which show how to adapt leadership styles based on context or project stage.
