MIYA UHS ALCIDION CASE STUDY

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) has been shortlisted for two prestigious HSJ Awards following the landmark delivery of MIYA Precision, Alcidion’s advanced clinical decision support and workflow platform, into its Emergency Department (ED). The project — delivered through the Federation for the Management of Projects (FMP) methodology — has been recognised in the categories of Digital Team of the Year and Improving Urgent and Emergency Care.

This achievement marks one of the most significant digital advancements in the Trust’s recent history, reshaping how clinicians access information, manage risk, and coordinate care in one of the NHS’s most pressured environments.

A Major Leap Forward for Emergency Care

The Emergency Department at UHS, like many across the country, faces sustained demand, rising patient acuity, and increasing operational complexity. Clinicians must make rapid decisions with incomplete information, often while navigating multiple systems and manual processes.

MIYA Precision was selected to address these challenges head‑on. The platform provides a real‑time, unified view of patient status, clinical risk indicators, and operational flow, enabling clinicians and operational teams to work with greater clarity and confidence.

The transformation has been described internally as a “step change” in how the ED operates, offering a level of visibility and decision support that was previously out of reach.

Delivered Through a New Standard of Collaboration

The Trust adopted the FMP methodology to ensure the project was delivered with discipline, transparency, and strong clinical leadership. This approach brought together ED clinicians, digital project managers, operational leaders, data specialists, clinical safety officers, and Alcidion’s product team into a single, federated delivery structure.

The methodology emphasised shared ownership, iterative co design, and rigorous assurance — all essential for delivering digital change safely in a live emergency environment.

A senior UHS Executive praised the project, stating:

“This is the best digital delivery the Trust has ever experienced. The partnership between our clinical teams, our digital programme, and Alcidion has set a new benchmark for how we deliver transformation. The impact on patient care is already clear.”

This endorsement reflects not only the technical success of the project but also the cultural shift it has inspired across the organisation.

Designed With Clinicians, For Clinicians

From the earliest stages, frontline staff were deeply involved in shaping the system. Co design workshops, simulation exercises, and real-world scenario testing ensured that MIYA Precision reflected the true rhythm and pressures of emergency care at UHS.

Clinicians helped define how patient information should be displayed, how risk should be flagged, and how handovers and escalations should be supported. This collaborative approach resulted in a system that feels intuitive, reduces duplication, and supports safer, more consistent decision making.

Since go live, staff have reported:

- Greater situational awareness across the department

- Reduced reliance on manual tracking updates

- More structured and reliable handovers

- Improved flow coordination during peak demand

The platform has quickly become a trusted part of the ED’s operational fabric.

A Safe, Controlled, and High Quality Go Live

The go live was delivered in a highly coordinated and carefully managed manner to protect patient safety and minimise disruption. Digital and clinical support teams were embedded in the department, providing real time assistance and capturing feedback that was acted on within hours, sometimes minutes.

The smooth transition has been widely praised across the Trust and is now being used as a model for future digital deployments.

National Recognition Through HSJ Award Nominations

The project’s success has been recognised nationally through two HSJ Award nominations:

Digital Team of the Year and Improving Urgent and Emergency Care.

This nomination celebrates the exceptional collaboration between UHS’s digital teams, ED clinicians, and Alcidion. It acknowledges the disciplined use of the FMP methodology and the delivery of a high impact digital solution in one of the NHS’s most challenging environments.

Improving Urgent and Emergency Care

This category highlights the measurable improvements in patient flow, safety, and operational efficiency achieved through MIYA Precision. It recognises the project’s contribution to reducing friction in emergency care and supporting clinicians with real time, actionable information.

Another senior UHS Executive praised the project, stating:

“These nominations are a testament to the dedication of our teams and the power of true partnership”. “This project shows what is possible when digital innovation is delivered with discipline, clinical leadership, and a relentless focus on patient care.”

A Blueprint for Future Transformation

The success of MIYA Precision in the Emergency Department has set a new standard for digital transformation at UHS. The Trust now plans to build on this foundation, exploring opportunities to extend the platform into other clinical areas and applying the FMP methodology to future project and programmes.

The project demonstrates that when digital innovation is delivered with clarity, collaboration, and clinical leadership, it can transform even the most complex corners of healthcare.
